Maywood community caravans for 2% rent control

The movement for rent control is growing Southeast Los Angeles County. Last year, Bell Gardens established rent control at 4%, and Cudahy recently enacted 3% rent control.

In neighboring Maywood, the community is now pushing for 2%. Organizing as Communities and Renters Autonomous Collective (CARACOL), Maywood residents and their supporters mounted a caravan for rent control on Saturday June 24th, 2023.

As the passed around the City, participants handed flyers to many interested residents. The group is encouraging residents to attend the Wednesday 6/28 6PM Council meeting.

At the end of the caravan, participants parked at City Hall gave short speeches, with one speaker saying, “We are CARACOL, we are organizing because we want a just rent control of 2%, because the rent is already too high and we don’t want displacement and harassment from the landlords. We know that housing is a human right and our community deserves to live with dignity and respect.”

Another speaker added that the community is thinking broadly, saying “We are demanding rent control of 2% max, not only in this city, but also in all the other cites of Southeast Los Angeles.”
